Product Description

The NT-USB is a highly versatile side-address microphone that is ideal for recording singing and musical performances in addition to spoken applications such as podcasting and voice-over. It is fully compatible with all mainstream recording applications on both Windows and Mac OS based computers, as well as the Apple iPad using Rode Rec, Garage Band, or any other recording app that accepts an external microphone. Use on the Apple iPad requires a suitable USB connection adaptor, such as the Apple Camera Connection Kit. The body of the NT-USB features a zero-latency stereo headphone monitoring (3.5mm) jack, which allows you to monitor the microphone input in real-time, along with dials to adjust the monitoring level and mix between the computer/iPad audio and the microphone input. A premium pop-filter is included, which fits onto the base of the mic, positioning the filter the ideal distance from the capsule to minimize plosives (hard 'B', 'T' or 'P' sounds that produce a harsh sound) during singing or speech. Also provided is a high-quality stand mount with industry standard 3/8" thread, desktop tripod stand that allows the NT-USB to sit at a comfortable height on a tabletop, and a pouch for storage of the microphone when not in use. Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, as well as the Apple iPad via the USB camera connection kit (available directly from Apple) Gain setting: When the gain is set too high, the microphone will be too sensitive and can pick up room noise that can even be heard as a hiss. When the gain is set too low, the microphone will be barely audible. Compatible with the SMR shockmount & WS2 foam windshield.

I work as an Instructional Designer, and occasionally have to narrate E-Learning's or short instructional videos. I have a home office and a corporate office location. Originally I was using my Blue Yeti USB microphone, with the Radius II shock mount attached to the PSA1 Studio Arm. This set up worked great, but it sucked having to move it from office to office. So I decided to get a second set up. After a lot of research for what would best fit my needs, I went for this set up. I now have a Rode NT-USB microphone attached to the SM6 Shock Mount, all on the PSA1 Studio arm. What I really like is that the microphone is actually suspended with the SM6 shock mount, so it reduces a lot of noise that the microphone pics up. I am not a professional Audio Engineer, and have been learning about all this on my own. However, I am a professional looking for great narration. This product fits my needs and my budget. In comparison to the Blue Yeti/Radius II set up I have, this is slightly better. There is slightly more control with this microphone than the Blue Yeti for Unidirectional sound. The Blue Yeti works great, and has a few functions this Microphone does not. For basic narration, where you only want to pick up sound/voice from one direction this mic is better. I use this microphone with Audacity, and Storyline 2 for software. It works great, and produces a high quality sound that I need to engage learners. I would buy this product again.

I must have done 40 hours of research before purchasing this mic. As a radio producer, I must be looking for ways to get great quality but within a modest budget, and this microphone does the trick. It is crisp, clear, and has a great sound to it. One of the VO talents we use has a higher pitched voice and this microphone brought out more of the bass in his voice, which makes his voice sound very good!

Do yourself a favor and buy a metal stand, like the On Stage DS7200B Adjustable Desk Microphone Stand. I think to keep the price down, Rode includes a very basic stand, but it really is not the right stand for this top-heavy microphone.

Keep in mind, this being a condenser microphone, it will pick up EVERYTHING in the room including the sound of the room itself. Make sure no fans, A/C, humming or background noise of any kind is present, or the mic will pick it up. I would recommend using a carpeted room with lots of soft sound absorbent material in the room to absorb reverb.

All in all, I'm very happy with this mic, so much that I've bought multiple ones and send them out to voice talent. It's super easy to use, being plug in play. You don't need any extra sound gear, so it's perfect for anyone. Thanks Rode for making great quality gear at a modest price!

I use this for live streaming and Discord calls and the audio quality is outstanding.

I was using the Blue Yeti before which had good quality BUT quickly developed an issue where there was a high pitch whine whenever I spoke. I've owned this RODE mic for a few months and there is zero whine. I'll update my review if any problems show up with the RODE.

The mic is pretty heavy. Maybe very slightly smaller and lighter than the YETI. The built in pop filter is nice since it's takes up so little space compared to a third party one.

My biggest con is I wish one of the knobs adjusted the pickup sensitivity. The mic is sensitive which I deal with by using a gate on my voice, which works great. The extra knob would just be a small convenience.

All in all, this is a great microphone for streaming, podcasting, or general chatting online. I haven't tested it for singing yet.

      Highly recommend.

EDIT: The piece that connects the microphone to my mic stand broke after a year, however getting a replacement was very easy. I sent them an email with a picture of the broken piece and they sent a replacement which arrived about a week later. Was all in all very easy to deal with, however I did register the mic's warranty online so make sure you do that when you get this. Good company!

The microphone in terms of sound quality is about what you'd get for the price. It works surprisingly well in multiple conditions, but does pick up a bit on background noise (noticeable if you put the sound up, I could hear my neighbors talking on the highest sound setting(ouch)). In order to get great sound, I had to finnick around with it, but I have a good setup now. On on the customer service.

If you register your microphone on the Rode website, you get the extended warranty on the product, and amazing customer service. The reason I had to get a support ticket, was because the microphone mount that this came with broke in half. I was hanging it off at a odd angle on my microphone stand, but the tolerance should have been there. Anyways, I got a support ticket, got a response in a few hours, and after saying my address, a replacement was shipped out. The replacement came in a day or two, but the clamping action was very weak. Another support ticket, and they sent me one of their higher end shock mounts. The one they sent has been working like a charm, and I've been happy since.

The sound quality is good, the support is great, and the peripherals that came with it aren't the best. However, this is a great starter microphone for mid to high level quality recording.

If you're checking the product page for this microphone, then it is likely you already know this is one of the best, if not the best, USB microphone available (definitely the best if you consider the price range).

I won't go into much detail about the sound, as better audio reviews of it are available on youtube, but I'll say the build quality for it is really solid. It is a mostly metal, subtle imitation of the Rode NT series of microphones. Perhaps the only part that leaves you wanting a little bit more about it is the small tripod and the O-ring that comes with it. They're plastic and leave a little to be desired. It seems from what I've read in some sites these parts are usually the first to break if you're not careful with your microphone.

That being said, a good boom arm will easily solve this trouble. And in case the O-ring below your microphone breaks, cracks or otherwise, there are some people who make custom metal ones, being that you could also instead buy a Rode SMR shockmount (the only compatible shock mount I know of for this microphone) which will come with a metal O-Ring to attach the microphone to it.

All of that being said, it seems I might have received some kind of refurbished unit from the seller "Adorama." The unit was safely packed, but in the back of the microphone there are some scratches that should definitely not have been there because of how beefy the packaging stereofoam around the microphone is. These could also be a QA issue with Rode, but I really have no way of knowing which of the 2 is responsible. It's probably not a big issue as the unit seems to be working perfectly, but it is definitely something worth noticing.

All in all, don't hesitate on the purchase, it is a great microphone.

I needed a good mic for my voice overs and podcasts, I had been choosing between Blue-Yeti and Rode-NT. Rode's mic has a pop-filter in the box which is a big plus for me, because although I could order a delivery for Blue-Yeti to my country, but no pop-filter seller gave me that option so I would had to buy a pop-filter locally somewhere. The main problem for me was that Rode-NT is more expensive, it didn't fit into my budget, but then I decided to wait for awhile and just in a few days Amazon put it on 30 pounds sale and that was the perfect time for my purchase. I've used [...] to watch over the price on the mic and it sent me an email when the price dropped, very helpful. The delivery was outstanding, it was rocket-speed! In less than a week I got the package right to my house, thanks to UPS so very much, they are the best!

Now that I have used the mic, I can say that the only weak point about it is the tripod - it feels fragile and it's very low, I have to move my head down to be close to the mic or place it on some additional stand, Blue-Yeti has a much better one. Seems like Rode didn't give that tripod enough love, maybe because they think everyone should be using a professional mic stand or a boom arm. Also, a mute button on the mic would have been a very useful feature, Blue-Yeti has it. Other than that, the mic is great, my voice sounds incredibly better compared to my cheap mic I used before, also from all of the comparisons I've seen on youtube, NT-USB does sound a bit better than Blue-Yeti.

When I was watching review videos on youtube about these mics, very often I heard warnings that because these are condenser mics they record all of the background noise, so I was a bit nervous if the quality would be OK in my room where I have absolutely nothing for sound-proofing, also my PC is quite loud. If you are concerned about that too, I can tell you clearly that my previous cheap microphone although it was Dynamic not Condenser, it had enormously bigger amount of noise. Yes, you have to be quite in your room, you have to close the windows and preferably you have to be home alone for your recordings, but you would do that even with a dynamic mic too. Set your Rode NT-USB on about 20% level in the system settings and it's ready to go.

Ok, I hope these tips will be useful for you guys, good luck to you and happy recordings!
