Position Title: Senior Engineering Technician / Engineer-In-Training
FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt
Salary Grade: Salary Grade 11
Reports To: Engineering Manager/City Engineer

Supervisory Functions
Under the direction of a Civil Engineer/Senior Civil Engineer, perform
skilled journey-level
technical work including engineering design and drafting, surveying,
construction inspection,
records management, and related technical engineering tasks for the
Engineering Department.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
In addition to basic duties, incumbents perform skilled technical tasks
in support of engineering
projects and programs. Incumbents typically receive instructions about
the work to be done
including scheduling and priorities, but work with relative independence
in selecting methods
and resolving routine problems. Employees at this level are expected to
exercise initiative and
judgment in independently carrying out assignments according to
established policies,
procedures and standards. When solutions are not readily attainable, the
employee refers the
problem to the supervisor. Leadership responsibility is normally limited
to on-the-job training of
other technical staff or interns. May act as crew leader on specific
assignments that do not
require ongoing direction from a supervisor.

SENIOR ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN/
ENGINEER-IN-TRAINING

Perform a variety of skilled project design support tasks from basic
data or worksheets
prepared by the designer, manually or by using computer-assisted
equipment; draft
final sheets for design reports, right of way plans, and contract plans;
reduce field notes,
compute and plot coordinates and elevations; interpret title reports and
legal
descriptions; check and revise plan sheets for accuracy of computations
and
conformance to drafting standards; calculate and check quantities for
contract bid
items; use work stations to create alignments, develop cross sections,
determine right-
of-way, estimate costs, determine earthwork quantities, monitor
schedules; design
items using routine design applications; research and write portions of
design reports,
environmental documents and contract specifications; prepare material
and exhibits for
hearings, public meetings, etc.; assist in writing and processing
various permits and
agreements.
Perform all duties on a survey crew including operation of a variety of
instruments such
as levels, transits, theodolite, EDM and total station; train other crew
members in
survey practices and instrument operation; take notes manually or with
data collector,
download and upload data collector to/from computer, edit data, access
mainframe
programs and operate personal computer to calculate alignment data,
triangulations,
benchmarks, grades, etc.; produce plots of survey data on electronic
plotter; serve as
leader of a two-person leveling crew; act as assistant party chief and
be r esponsible for
survey party operations in the absence of the chief.
Serve as a lead inspector on public and private development construction
projects to
ensure projects are constructed according to approved plans,
specifications, and City
standards; perform layout as required; monitor the contractor\'s work
for one or more
major aspects of a project; collect samples; take measurements and
calculate quantities
for contract payments; complete daily records, quantity sheets and other
documentation; measure locations of utilities at project sites,
establish utility manhole
and ring elevations, measure distances between utilities and depths of
pipes, and
perform other measurement activities as necessary; train and lead other
staff.
Utilize sound engineering judgment to solve a variety of design and
construction
problems as they arise. Operate a variety of surveying, drafting,
measuring,
photography, recording, office equipment, and tools to perform assigned
duties.
